Arriving in Moab, Utah in a 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible, and settling in the city after its engine failed, Dan Mick is a locally-recognized presence as owner of Dan Mick’s Guided Jeep Tours – exploring the red rock terrain of Canyonlands National Park on four wheels. Operating since 1992, Dan’s daily drives take visitors across the rugged, undulating landscape, navigating natural landmarks carved into the desert – carried by his natural storytelling, philosophies, and observations.
Travelling to Utah in search of stories and characters, distanced from the political noise, filmmaker Jamie McCormack and cinematographer Joshua Fry connected with Dan after numerous conversations arrived at his name. Sitting down together and letting him share his thoughts with the world, his warm humor and perspectives grew into short documentary Dan Mick, Out Jeeping – profiling his life against the vastness of Moab’s dramatic surroundings.
With just a day and a half before Dan set off on a road trip, the film came together over a whirlwind shoot with the fortune of perfect light – filming into the night, and capturing last interviews the next day. Driving out on the red rock of the canyons and allowing conversation to flow, Dan Mick, Out Jeeping seeks out a real reflection of this unique corner of the Midwest, where community comes with an outsider vision and sense of adventure.
