Los Angeles-based performer Jasmine Albuquerque leads this intimate dance in the landscape around her Malibu Canyon home—an area that, today, stands devastated after 2018’s tragic Woolsey Fires, which saw numerous fatalities and thousands of homes destroyed. Shot before the natural disaster tore its way through this part of the east coast state, the film—from long-term Nowness contributor Justin Tyler Close—stands as a testament, a love-letter, not only to this outstanding stretch of California, but also serves as an expression of self love and personal freedom.
"The location played a big role in this film," explains Close. "It truly was a relationship between Jasmine and nature. We shot this at Jasmine's house in Malibu Canyon, which now is abandoned and charred from the Woolsey Fires. They lost everything. So in many ways this film is a love letter to that land.
"My director of photography Mike Berlucci and myself first shot the film and then Laura Marling composed music afterwards. She wrote her composition in an experimental way, following her feelings rather than being guided by the search for perfection."
