“It’s a very straightforward love story,” says Connan Mockasin of the song that inspired today’s lascivious video directed by Daniel Brereton and starring New York-based model Naomi Shimada. “It is about being all alone, wondering if there is someone out there to find you.” “I’m the Man, That Will Find You” is taken from Mockasin’s lauded, recently released album Caramel, which was recorded in a hotel room in Tokyo earlier this year and conjures a mysterious cocoon-like feeling that flits between comfort and unease. “I wanted to make a record called Caramel, and wanted it to sound like what I thought a record called Caramel would sound like—flirty and slick,” says the New Zealand-born, Manchester-based troubadour. “In the same way, we wanted this video to be calm and flirty.” The video was shot at a private residence in Rochdale, UK, by Brereton, who has previously worked with Django Django, Metronomy and Daniel Avery, and collaborated on the promo for Mockasin’s “Forever Dolphin Love,” the title track from the artist’s psychedelic debut. “The pool scene was so steamy,” says Mockasin of his on-set highlight. “The cameraman almost slipped and fell in!”
