Twenty-five-year-old Québécois crossover phenomenon Coeur de Pirate (aka Béatrice Martin) has been dubbed the voice of la chanson Française for her generation. With over one million records sold, the Montréal-born siren’s empowering new single is the first from just-released LP Roses

For an artist who has been playing the piano since age three, experimented with post-hardcore as a member of December Strikes First, and worked with visionary producer (and ex-Arcade Fire member) Howard Bilerman, Martin looks deep into her “pirate’s heart” for the stirring “Crier Tout Bas” (rough translation: “cry softly”).

This is the second collaboration between Coeur de Pirate and director Kevin Calero, inspired by the visual poetics of Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi. “The video was shot across vast swaths of California last February,” says Calero. “Driving up 5,000ft in altitude in Sequoia National Park at night without winter tires or phone reception during a snowstorm definitely made this a memorable experience. It felt ironic to have left the Montréal winter to shoot snow-covered sequoias and cacti in California.”
