Rising to international acclaim with Icona Pop’s number one hit “I Love It” and appearing on Iggy Azalea's rap anthem “Fancy,” Charli XCX has been an instrumental figure in pop music’s ever-changing landscape.
Born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, the singer-songwriter has been going by her MySpace username since the age of fourteen when she cut her teeth in London’s underground music and rave scene.
In this episode of My Place, Charli XCX reveals that over a decade on from playing warehouse spaces and clubs she still has the party spirit. Her 1920s Tudor-style home in the Hollywood Hills contains an asymmetrical assemblage of keyboards, novelty-sized objects, taxidermy, bunting and photographs. The two-story living room at the heart of the timbered-framed house is designated “the party zone” where the “Boom Clap” singer welcomes a revolving door of guests. It was at one of these infamously gatherings that she met Australian musician Troye Sivan with whom she went on to release the nostalgia-driven track “1999” earlier this year.
House parties and friendships are instrumental to Charli XCX’s creative process and outlet. With her third studio album set to be released this year, the artist shows no signs of slowing down.
