Since the early 90s Massive Attack (who formed from Bristol-based soundsystem The Wild Bunch) have been plowing their own distinctive musical furrow, developing their sample-laden, darkly atmospheric sound far beyond its trip-hop beginnings. Their latest album, Heligoland, has been seven years in the making—band members Robert del Naja and Neil Davidge spent 2003 to 2007 touring and writing soundtracks under the name "100 Suns"—and sees the return of original Massive attack member Grant Marshall ("Daddy G"). For the promo for the first single, "United Snakes," the group enlisted the talents of London-based multi-disciplinary studio United Visual Artists, who were responsible for the elaborate light shows for Massive Attack’s 100th Window tour in 2003. Heligoland is released by Virgin on February 8.
