Comprising a slathering of cranberry sauce, a dash of gravy, Christmas ham, mashed potato and a spoonful of green bean casserole atop a classic dinner roll, Scanwiches blogger Jon Chonko creates the ultimate post-Christmas sandwich. There is no better advocate on the art of the sandwich than the founder of the cult blog, who uses a standard flat-bed scanner from the comfort of his desk at Google to share his daily bread with a dedicated fan base of carbohydrate-loving followers. No meager lunchtime snack, Chonko's "scanwiches" go to gastronomic extremes to offer beautiful and mouth-watering takes on the lunch box classic. “This one has all the fixtures of my own Christmas dinner,” says Chonko of his festive concoction. “It’s things that my parents or grandparents would make, but ready to go in a sandwich. It tastes just like Christmas.” Graphic designer Chonko has immortalized his Katz deli bun and filler in a new book Scanwiches dedicated to his blog—including such inspired variations as a soft noodle sandwich, and the “Dagwood sandwich” made famous by the Blondie comics. “The Dagwood was the craziest one,” says Chonko. “It’s the kind with 30 or 40 ingredients in. A particular challenge when they weigh 8lbs.”
