For the second installment of our series Fetish Untied, art director and set designer duo Gary Card and Ferry Gouw offer a playful take on the sweat-soaked, leather-clad world of bondage clubs. Here, Card talks about their decision to go furry:
“Before making the film we looked at as much bondage stuff we could find, and then the idea was to match the club scenes of the Al Pacino film Cruising, which was kinda remade by James Franco with Interior. Leather Bar. We based the film on moments from that, so it’s kind of a copy of a copy. We also looked at the 1980s sci-fi horror porno Café Flesh for some real sleaze inspiration.
"The decision to use puppets was simply about doing something utterly ridiculous. Bondage seems like serious business, so finding a way to subvert the subject was irresistible. Subverting the subversive! Plus it seemed like it would be so much fun to make—all these dancing fuzzy dudes all getting off with each other."
