French New Wave director Agnès Varda turned her lens on Oakland-based revolutionary group The Black Panthers in 1970, following the arrest of their co-founder Huey P. Newton. The documentary is a powerful and political statement in the fight for racial equality from a director who—although filmed observationally—manges to convey a sweeping empathy for the movement.
