Loïk Gomez, better known as BFRND, has been creating music for Balenciaga fashion shows since its F/W 2017 collection. In this new music video, the musician is seen traveling through Paris at night, leaving a bedroom to go on stage. Humming with a straight face as he enters an otherworldly space with neon lights, the music video occupies a realm between dream and reality.
French Connection shares the same late-night retro aesthetic as his recent cover of Cory Hart’s 1983 hit “Sunglasses At Night” for Balenciaga’s 2021 pre-collection. "My music is a new genre that doesn't fall into any established categories," says Gomez, who draws inspiration from industrial, cold wave, pop, as well as bringing classical music into a new context.
"After quarantining at home in March of 2020, I sat in the studio listening to the songs I had originally written and realized how terrible they all were," says the artist who, for the past two years, had been working on his debut album, Afterlife. “I quit smoking and drinking and after a while the creative inspirations just kept coming to me, which in turn led to writing over twenty tracks." French Connection is a testament to what BFRND has achieved during this period of isolation.
