To coincide with the release of his long-awaited EP, Patterns, Attawalpa shares his most evocative visuals to date. For earlier music videos, the London-based artist has frequently turned the camera on himself—from becoming a video game character to an astral projection—but Tucked In Tight grants the viewer privileged access to his intimate life, behind the scenes and under the sheets.
Lena Dunham, creator, writer, and star of HBO television series Girls, directed this project to reflect the themes raised in Attawalpa’s track and EP as a whole; trauma, toxic masculinity, and the complexities of modern relationships.
"Lu’s song is all about the intense, almost romantic dynamic we develop with our phones,” says Dunham, whose filming style encourages the viewer to consider both the joys and consequences of mediating one’s life through a phone. “On our first date he told me about the song and the title and described it as the saddest love song in the world. I was hooked.
“I was simultaneously thinking about how trained we are to broadcast both our pain and pleasure online, and how desperately we—especially women—are trained to prove we are being seen, loved, and desired. In a new relationship, I found myself wanting to document moments rather than just exist in them. So I wanted to play with this idea and confuse the audience a bit with the intimacy of what they’re watching and simultaneously find a way to show what a nightmare being turned into #boyfriendgoals can be for the confused guy in question. After all, if patriarchy hurts everyone then so too does insta-storying your boyfriend all day while he’s just trying to get some chores done."
"Tucked In Tight" is the closing track on Attawalpa's new EP Patterns, which is out now
