Arriving at the Monaco Yacht Show in a J Craft Torpedo last October, Sir Roger Moore commented, “I can certainly see James Bond arriving in a boat like this at an exclusive party somewhere on the Riviera, and I think any of my seven Bond girls would have loved it too.” J Craft owner/designer Johan Attvik points out that an ordinary jaunt in the Torpedo could take him, well, anywhere. “We have clients who can drive their boats from Monaco to Italy, or Barcelona to Ibiza—hundreds of miles—crossing smaller oceans without any fear,” he says. Here Attvik shares his favorite destinations to tie-up.

It’s a classic for a reason; ever since Brigitte Bardot stepped onto the sand in a gingham bikini for Roger Vadim’s And God Created Woman in 1955, Saint-Tropez’s glamour has been legendary. Attvik splits his time between Stockholm and this Côte d’Azur paradise, which is also the site where he crashed his Riva Aquarama—the moment that inspired the Torpedo.

A standard for the mega-rich jetset, and the main center of Costa Smeralda, where the annual Sardinia Cup is held off the coast, Attvik’s Torpedo threads its way through this stunning marina on the north side of Sardinia.

Set off from the thigh of the boot in the Tyrrhenian Sea, Monte Argentario in Grosseto is a hidden world unto itself. A formerly fortified hilltown, it surrounds a natural harbor, Porto Ercole, the spot where Caravaggio came to die. In the Torpedo, the marina on the southeast corner of the island is a hop, skip and a jump from Rome, but here you’re in Tuscany, and the rations to be gathered on shore are altogether different from those in Lazio.

This little shadow of an island south of Ibiza—a favorite of nude sunbathers and windsurfers—is remote enough to keep it relatively free of the tourist mobs.

“Hopefully we can get there. It is a long trek,” says Attvik. But when you set out to build the world’s greatest cruiser, you’d want to drive it along Venice’s celebrated Grand Canal at least once.
