Inside Childwick Manor in St Albans, Stanley Kubrick amassed a staggering archive of research for his films—whole rooms were devoted to photographs of mountain-top hotels (The Shining) or possible prostitute’s doorways (Eyes Wide Shut). He spent decades working on the epic sci-fi film Artificial Intelligence, the story of a boy robot’s quest to become human. Artist Chris Baker was hired to sketch its fantastical futuristic scenarios, many of which are printed for the first time in Thames & Hudson’s new book, alongside Kubrick’s collected research material, and stills from Steven Spielberg’s eventual film, made in 2001 and dedicated to Kubrick.
