Isaac Mizrahi’s Fall 2010 collection was inspired by the not-so-great outdoors—namely, Central Park. In the designer's mind, this slice of urban greenery provided the perfect location for a very metropolitan camping expedition. Dressing his girls for a night under the stars (whether sleeping on a roll-up foam mat or sipping cocktails on the roof of a member's club), Mizrahi fielded lush, fur-lined hoods, quilted jackets and Swarovski-crystal-encrusted toggles, craftily mixing these practical winter elements with the overstated glamour of his glittering eveningwear (maxi dresses and explosions of taffeta and lace). Manhattan is a constant in the work of the four-time CFDA award-winning designer, who trained under New York design icons Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein before selling his first collection to Bergdorf Goodman at the age of 25 and launching his eponymous line a year later in 1987. Known for his trademark campy humor as well as his extravagant designs, he is fond of the spotlight: after his central role in Unzipped (a hit documentary about the fashion industry) in 1995, he has made a series of cameo appearances in movies and on television, including small roles in Frasier and Ugly Betty. Later this year Mizrahi will host his second season of Bravo's series The Fashion Show with 70s supermodel Iman. For a daily dose, his website features hundreds of "webisodes" that capture Mizrahi discussing anything from baking to style tips for a lunch lady in Des Moines. The site also features information about his latest collections, revealing insider tidbits such as the delightfully kitschy tag lines—“Parka Avenue,” “Irving Penn Station” and “Buffalo Bill Blass”—that were titles for the looks in his last show. Today, NOWNESS features a selection of images by Jason Frank Rothenberg, taken backstage at Mizrahi’s Fall 2010 presentation this past February.
