Imagining how “the material nature of the body will be translated into the internet” is the inspiration behind director Patricio Lima’s interactive fashion-ballet hybrid From Signal To Noise. Drawing from sculpture as much as “a wired world,” the Buenos Aires-born New York-based filmmaker enlisted a maverick group of downtown talents to realize an ambitious project.
Avant-garde choreographer Cecilia Bengolea, in between projects for Opéra de Lyon and Centre Pompidou, adapted a dance for New York City Ballet soloist Megan LeCrone with a score featuring “Geneva” by Kindness, a slow-burning ballad from the acclaimed British musician’s sophomore album, Otherness. Using 3D scanners, LeCrone’s beguiling performance is an interactive viewing experience with three layers of raw data that you can switch between using 1, 2, 3 on your keyboard.
“One of the layers represents an ability to see the amount of sheer strength that is being used by the body in ballet, almost like a heat-tech camera,” says Lima, whose training lies in film and industrial design. “You can’t see it translated when you go to the ballet because they make things look effortless, but when you see it up close, the tension and the power of the body is mind blowing."
The interactive version is available on desktop and laptops; a special edit plays on mobile devices.
