Dr. Adrian Smith, who heads up the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences & North Carolina State University, is fascinated by insects big and small.

In this video he films different moths as they take off in flight. Capturing multicolored and snow white species, these slow motion takes reveal the outstanding diversity of our fuzzy, flying friends. The seven species on display are: Rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda), Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus), Dark Marathyssa (Marathyssa inficita), Virginian Tiger Moth (Spilpsoma Virginica), Beautiful Wood Nymph (Eudryas Grata), White-Dotted Prominent (Nadata Gibbosa) and the Blinded Sphinx (Paonias Exaecata)
